Developing critical thinking and communication skills through debate

At the UP Democratic School, we believe that critical thinking and effective communication skills are extremely important for today's youth. That is why we have created a unique educational environment where students are able to freely share their thoughts and ideas, take the initiative, cooperate and support each other.

In this context, debate becomes an important component of the pedagogical methodology. This technology has many advantages: it helps to develop competent speech and public speaking skills, develops thinking, and teaches you to communicate effectively with others. Here's how debate affects teenagers' academic performance and why it's important for becoming conscious and confident individuals.

What is debate and where is it relevant?

Debate is not just a conversation or entertainment. It is a clearly organised and structured process of exchanging opinions, the benefits of which are hard to overestimate. At UP Democratic School for Teens, debate can be used in classes in various subjects as an important component of education.

  • Debate practice should be based on clear rules and procedures.
  • Topic. A relevant and interesting topic is chosen that promotes a broad discussion.
  • Teams. You can divide students into pro and con teams to stimulate discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each aspect of the issue.
  • Preparation. Participants research their topic in detail, look for facts, and prepare arguments and counter-arguments.
  • Presentations. Each team should be given a certain amount of time to speak, express their positions and respond to the opponent's arguments.
  • Discussion. At the end of the debate, there is a collective discussion where teenagers analyse the speeches and highlight the advantages of each team.

This approach makes learning more interesting and actively promotes the development of skills that are important for the future of teenagers.

What are the benefits of debating?

The benefits of debating for teenagers are particularly clear when it comes to developing critical thinking. This practice helps students to consider issues from different perspectives, analyse arguments, and express their opinions.

One of the main benefits of debate is that it encourages adolescents to identify good arguments. When preparing for an important debate, students should research different sources of information, separating facts from speculation. This process teaches them to be critical of everything they hear or read and to find strong arguments.

Debates also develop the ability to analyse and compare different points of view, which is another important advantage. Participants have to look at arguments from a different angle and understand that there are many approaches to any issue. This broadens the thinking of teenagers and helps them to take into account the diversity of views. In addition, participation in debates teaches students to build logical chains of arguments, which develops logical thinking and information structuring skills.

An equally important benefit of debating for teenagers is the development of the ability to interact effectively with others. Participants in have to listen carefully to others, answer questions, and express their opinions convincingly. This practice contributes to the development of communication skills, as adolescents learn to listen to their opponents, be respectful of others, and respond appropriately to constructive criticism.

Teamwork is also considered to be an advantage of debates for teenagers. Participants get used to working together, joining forces to achieve a common goal. This is how they develop skills of cooperation and mutual assistance.

During the debate, teenagers practice not just speaking well, but also conveying any information in a way that is easy to understand. It is an opportunity to try their hand at public speaking and gain self-confidence. Perhaps the most important benefit, however, is that teenagers begin to argue their opinions convincingly. Students know how to use words, tone of voice, facial expressions and gestures to best convey their ideas.

Conversations that build personality

The benefits of debate for teenagers are endless, but it's better to participate once than to read about it a hundred times. We invite you to study at the UP Democratic School, where every day is filled with interesting discussions, new impressions, and useful experience!
